Chop-Job | The Early Beginning

February 16th, 2009 · No comments

The 3rd term started with me getting the description of our new project – CHOP-JOB

My task was to develop and design a new ‘cutting-tool’ either for the garden or the home use.  I had to make a research and work parallel on two different concepts until the first major presentation in November. So I decided to rethink the coffee grinder and the earth auger. The kitchen gadget was a more poetic and conceptual thing, whereas the earth auger at first became a highly functional forestation tool. Two strong concepts evolved out of the coffee grinder, both looking much easier to solve on the first sight. In several discussions with Dr. Georg Wagner (our professor for ‘technical solutions’) I had to let the ‘Wiener Kaffeemühle’ die because according to him it would have become a ‘technical-overkill’ – too complicated for a simple kitchen tool.

Bernd Stelzer, my supervising tutor on this project, advised me not to make a huge drilling machine for the earth auger – I should rather try to make it smaller, for home-use only, maybe for planting flowers and bushes only. So I tried to create a handy ‘garden drill’ with an old lady as a target group in my head.

So on 5th November I presented ‘Molee | the earth auger’ and ‘Cafecubique | the coffee grinder’. Here you can see some sketches and ideas I created in the last month.
