In the 2nd term our class had to work on a project concerning the city of Graz – where I study. Every one of us had to develop a concept that should ‘reanimate’ or revive the ‘Annenstrasse’ – the main road connection between the central station and the centre. In former times this street was an important shopping street but turned to become shabby and sleazy in the 90s. It has also become a cultural melting pot with a lot of occupants with a migration background. Our solution should be divided into two concepts: 1 part should be concentrated on the annual ‘Assembly’ design and fashion exhibition which takes place in the ‘Annenstraße’ and the surroundings. It should be cheap and fully removable without any damage after a week. The second part should be a vision starting out with the first concept – it should be an enhancement of the first concept but should stay for a longer period.
My concept | I wanted to draw the attention of the pedestrians as well as the collaboration of the local occupants. The change should come from them and not from the city government or from some architects. I wanted to give the residents an opportunity to show their participation and to give them a tool to show an effect. The facades should serve as media platform – a textured projection screen for movies and music shows in context with the annual exhibition. As soon as the sun set the audience would gather and the movie should start. The sound should be conveyed through headphones or over speakers.
